Kinsmen Telemiracle Foundation Donates $1.25 Million
Currently, patients in southern Saskatchewan who require diagnosis and treatment for arrhythmias are often given lifelong medication, which is inadequate treatment. Other patients need to be sent out of province.
“Heart rhythm abnormalities are a major cause of death and disability in heart patients,” says Dr. George Garbe, Section Head of Cardiology for the RQHR. “The development of an EP Lab in Regina will help us to recruit highly trained subspecialists in this field who will be instrumental in the management of these patients. The lab will provide an environment for the prompt provision of state-of-the-art diagnostic and treatment procedures vital to the survival and wellbeing of these patients.”
“The Kinsmen Foundation Electrophysiology Lab will complete the cardiosciences program,” says John Fedirko, Manager of Interventional Cardiac Services. “Now we will be able to diagnose and treat all of those patients who are either not being treated for their cardiac arrhythmia conditions or are being transferred to places such as Alberta and B.C.”
Three years ago, The Mosaic Company committed $2 million to establish the Mosaic Heart Centre, taking cardiac services to a new level. Enhancements have contributed to improved patient care, patient outcomes and patient flow, in addition to better wait times. The upgraded Cardiac Catheterization (Cath) Lab is considered to be a leading facility in the country.
Mosaic has recently donated an additional $400,000 to the Hospitals of Regina Foundation in support of medical equipment that will be put to use in the Kinsmen Telemiracle Foundation EP Lab.
“The Mosaic Company is proud that its investment in cardiac services has been the catalyst for enhancing this facility,” says Norm Beug, Senior Vice President of Potash Operations for Mosaic. “What has made this investment close to home for us is that Mosaic employees and their family members have needed cutting-edge cardiac care – and that’s what we’ve been able to help provide to all citizens of Saskatchewan through the Mosaic Heart Centre.”
“The EP Lab is a significant part of our shared vision for the Mosaic Heart Centre to provide a fully comprehensive cardiac program,” says Judy Davis. “The Hospitals of Regina Foundation is deeply honoured and grateful to the Kinsmen Telemiracle Foundation for making this substantial commitment to the Mosaic Heart Centre. Their support will have a profound impact on the future of our community’s healthcare.”
