Thousands of people in southern Saskatchewan need surgery for a wide variety of reasons, from knee and hip replacements, removing cancerous tumours, heart bypass surgery or simply to repair a broken arm. Regina's hospitals also witness an average of five serious trauma cases daily, often requiring one or more surgical interventions. Last year, more than 26,800 surgeries were performed in Regina’s hospitals.

Thanks to the support of our community, Regina’s surgical capacity was increased through a multi-year renovation and technology upgrade project. In 2023, the Hospitals of Regina Foundation invested in two new surgical navigation systems and a new state-of-the-art neuro-surgical microscope, allowing the Regina’s General Hospital and Pasqua Hospital to meet the growing demand for surgical procedures in southern Saskatchewan.

Prior to that, in 2019, the Foundation invested in upgrading 18 existing operating rooms at both hospitals, plus two new surgical suites were created. All operating rooms received lighting upgrades, and surgical booms that were more than 30 years old were replaced. Two operating rooms in each hospital were equipped with advanced audio-visual equipment that allows for remote surgical teaching and enables nationwide and even international collaboration on complex surgical cases. This technology is not only the future of surgery but also improves the training experience for medical students, helping us attract and retain skilled health care professionals for our hospitals.
