Sept. 10, 2025, Regina, Sask. – Today, Hospitals of Regina Foundation, the Saskatchewan Health Authority (SHA) and Regina Police Service jointly presented the SWAT Superhero Rappel event at the Regina General Hospital. This action-filled event raised funds in support of children’s health care and brought joy and excitement to many kids who are patients in the Regina General Hospital.
This fundraiser, in support of children’s health care through Hospitals of Regina Foundation, involved members of the Regina Police Service SWAT who rappelled down the outside wall of the hospital to the pediatric unit playroom window, dressed as superheroes. Their smiles, waves and costumes created a lot of excitement in the group of star-struck kids on the unit. The SWAT Superheroes were later joined by their canine unit and visited with children who are receiving care in the unit.
After visiting the kids, the SWAT Superheroes rappelled from the roof into the Regina General Hospital courtyard, bringing even more excitement and fun to other patients, their families and hospital staff.
Thanks to the generosity of the presenting sponsor, GMS, and the superhero sponsor, TD Bank Group, along with the Regina Police Service members and their families, this event raised over $15,379 for the priority needs of our pediatric programs.
“Each year, more than 20,000 children need our hospitals, making pediatric programs are a priority for the Foundation,” says Dino Sophocleous, president and CEO of Hospitals of Regina Foundation. “We are grateful to have a partner like the Regina Police Service SWAT team join us in helping make lives better for southern Saskatchewan kids, right here at home.”
“Being able to bring some joy to children and families during a tough time means a lot to us,” says Cst. Paul McNutt of the Regina Police Service SWAT Team. “We’re parents too and wanted to do something extra fun and meaningful for the community we serve. Dressing up as superheroes and surprising some very deserving kids feels like the perfect way to do it.”
Last year, the pediatric inpatient unit at the Regina General Hospital cared for more than 2,600 kids. In addition, the pediatric outpatient clinics, including the Children’s Cancer Clinic, had over 3,800 patient visits.
“Putting a smile on a kid’s face at a time when they’re facing a scary health situation can help make all the difference,” said Tom Sorensen, Director of Maternal and Children’s Programs for Regina and Rural for the SHA. “This simple gesture will help instill a sense of confidence and positivity in them helping them feel like they can overcome anything, just like their favourite super heroes. We thank the RPS members, and the sponsors, for being superheroes to these super kids.”
